In the news at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival

Every year for 10 days out of the month of January, a little movie party occurs in Park City, Utah - you might have heard about it. The Sundance Film Festival, which this year is being held from January 21- January 31, and as always, is a huge success! Sleep, of course, is not a factor if your goal is to fit in as many movies as you possibly can in the 10 days - and participate in the after parties too; remember, you can always sleep on the plane!

The Movies

All the movies are unique and deserving of awards. Most parties involved in the making of said movies really feel just being invited to Sundance is an honor, but at least one movie might even be too unique for the average movie goers! The Swiss Army Man is basically a movie about dead bodies and flatulence. Starring Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame and Paul Dano, crowds have been lining up hours in advance to get in, and once inside, they find a movie that is about a lost man who makes friends with the gas passing remains of Daniel Radcliffe’s character, and the flatulence seems to be too much and they rush to get out! Something stinks in Sundance, and although the movie is quite good, it may never be more than an extended fart joke!

The Stars

Nepotism is big at Sundance, and the stars of Yoga Hosers might sound a tad familiar; Lily-Rose Depp, daughter of co-star Johnny Depp, and Harley Quinn Smith, daughter of director Kevin Smith (you may recognize him as Silent Bob from the Clerks movies!) are happily making their Sundance debut! Kate Beckinsale and Chloe Sevigny classed up the festival making an appearance to speak for their period piece, Love & Friendship, based on the Jane Austen novella, Lady Susan. And Elijah Wood stepped out of his acting shoes and directing cape to DJ for his movie “The Greasy Strangler” pre-party!

The Awards

Well, at least one of the awards, The Amazon Studios Sundance Institute award (and the grant money that goes along with the award!) goes to “Morris from America” producers Sara Murphy and Adele Romanski and also to Julie Goldman, executive producer of “Weiner,” a documentary. This award recognizes boldness and creativity amongst independent producers. More awards will be forthcoming with the major ones being announced on January 30^th.

The Parties

Sundance wouldn’t be Sundance without all the parties that accompany it, and this year is no exception - starting with the Delta Festival Shuttle at LAX airport. 180 of Hollywood’s most beautiful people will get a chance to board a Delta flight with a Sundance theme and enjoy brunch and cocktails, in-flight entertainment (a Sundance movie, perhaps?) and a free gift; even the rich and famous appreciate free stuff! Premiere Parties for nominated movies include “The Hollars” directed by John Krasinski, and “31”, Rob and Sheri Moon Zombie’s latest horror film, are not to be missed, and cocktail parties, brunches, and after parties - the list is endless and will ensure fuzzy memories of the week’s events if done right!

The Presidents’ Day holiday is one of the most popular weekends in Park City. Many visitors flock to the area to enjoy this long weekend, and Park City doesn’t disappoint with the many events and activities. Don’t miss a day on the slopes of our great mountains. The Association

Egyptian Theatre

Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 11-14

Come out and enjoy the sounds of The Association on the group’s 50th Anniversary Tour! Making history since 1965, this group has received seven Grammy nominations and has six gold and three platinum records. Enjoy favorite hits such as “Never My Love”, “Windy”, and “Cherish”.

2016 Winter Art Salon

Feb. 12-16

The Winter Art Salon is a four-day event showcasing highly recognized artists and other vendors. You will have the opportunity to purchase art and luxury goods, as well as participate in seminars and discussions with artists and experts. All of the events will take place on the slopes of Deer Valley and all proceeds will benefit the Kimball Art Center.

Combine Valentine’s and Presidents’ Day

This year, Valentine’s Day falls during the same weekend as Presidents’ Day. Take this opportunity to enjoy the romance of Park City. This is the perfect time for a weekend getaway. You can enjoy a cozy bed and breakfast or mountaintop luxury retreat.

Park City at Midnight Lineup Announced

Recently the Sundance Institute announced part of the upcoming lineup for the Sundance Film Festival. Announced were the Park City at Midnight lineup, which is known for its, shall we say, “offbeat” tastes. Here’s a quick look at the Midnight lineup:

“Yoga Hosers” — Two teenage best friends from Winnipeg love yoga and live on their phones. However, these two sophomores are invited to a senior party by the school’s popular hottie. These two then accidently uncover an ancient even buried beneath the neighborhood convenience store.

“Under the Shadow” — As the Iraq-Iran war enters its eighth year, a mother and daughter are torn apart by the bombings of Tehran. They struggle to stay together amid the ravages of war, while a mysterious evil stalks their apartment.

“Antibirth” — Set in a desolate community of drug-fueled Marines and kidnapping rumors, Lou, the stoner, wakes up after a night of partying. She wakes with symptoms of a strange illness, along with visions. She struggles to get a grasp on reality, while conspiracy stories spread.

“Carnage Park” — In 1978, a team of wannabe criminals botch a bank heist and flee with their hostages into the California desert. Here they find themselves fighting for survival against a psychotic ex-military sniper.

“The Blackout Experiments” — Friends discover a dark underworld of psychosexual horrors called Blackout. What started as a thrill rid through the unknown, turns personal and develops into obsessions that twists their lives and blurs the line between fantasy and reality.

“The Greasy Strangler” — Big Ronnie and his son Brayden meet tourist Janet on Ronnie’s Disco Walking Tour. When a fight for Janet’s heart starts between Ronnie and Brayden, the Greasy Strangler is unleashed.

“Outlaws and Angels” — A notorious bounty hunter is closing in on the trail of a gang of cold-blooded outlaws invading a home of a seemingly innocent frontier family. An unexpected game of cat and mouse begins, leading to role reversal, seduction, and revenge.

“Trash Fire” — Owen is forced to confront the past he has been running from his entire adult life. Subsequently, his girlfriend Isabel and he become tangled in a web of lies, deceit, and murder.

“31” — Five friends are kidnapped the day before Halloween. While held hostage, they are forced to play a violent game — 31, where they must survive 12 hours against a gang of evil clowns.

Fall in Park City: So Many Awesome Things to Do!

Autumn is almost here and it’s a favorite time of year with the mild temperatures and that lovely crispness in the air. And this is the perfect time of year to enjoy some fall activities.

Take to The Hills

Taking a hike through the fall colors can be a great adventure. One of the most popular is the Mid-Mountain Trail were you’ll be at an elevation of 8,000 feet and hiking between the Canyons and Deer Valley. There are more than 400 miles of trails in the area, and with the cooler temps, you can enjoy many of them without worrying about the heat.

You can also take a short drive to Kamas and the nearby Uinta Mountains were you can enjoy the spectacular colors.

You can get closer to nature with a tour of the Swaner Nature Preserve where you can catch a glimpse of some of the area’s wildlife. Take a zipline ride to soar through the air above the treetops. And again, there’s lift-served hiking and biking to enjoy at the area resorts.

Take to the Skies

As the air begins to cool, you’ll start seeing more and more colorful balloons dotting the skies. This is a great ride — high above the rooftops, where you can take in all the beautiful autumn colors. One of the best balloon rides you can enjoy are the sunrise flights, where you will often enjoy a glass of champagne while soaring through the air.

Visit the Farmers’ Market

The weekly Park City Farmers’ Market is a great place to take advantage of the harvest season. You’ll find great fresh produce including tomatoes, chilies, corn and much more. There are also breads, jams, jellies and other tasty delights that are a great addition to a fall barbeque.

It’s Time to Look Forward to Winter

The autumn months are a wonderful precursor to the upcoming winter months. It’s the time to swap out the summer for winter clothes and start tuning up the skis and boards.

Park City Spring Ski Trifecta

It is a Park City “bluebird” day! Not a cloud in the sky with a current temperature of 27 and a predicted high of over 50 degrees.

The end of the ski season is still over two weeks away and surely there will be more storms before it is over. But today has all the markings of spring and the summer activities soon to come.

Spring may be in the air but the skiing in Park City is far from over! You just have to adjust your thinking to match the conditions. Start the day off with a few Deer Valley groomers. Remember that while the weatherman said the overnight temp would be in the mid 30’s, the wind chill and elevation put that temp into the 20’s so the snow did freeze overnight. Wait until the sun has warmed up the non-groomed runs. By mid-morning the bumps will ski like mashed potatoes and the groomed runs will allow you to carve a trench behind you. These are great snow conditions!!

The skiing and snowboarding will stay great but a little wet as the afternoon sun takes hold. Spring fever can really take over at this point. The great thing is that Park City is ready for that. Give in to the call and move onto the next endeavor. Go down to Midway (just 20 minutes away) and play nine holes of golf at Wasatch or Soldier Hollow (yes they are OPEN), grab a bike and go for a ride, the fishing is great, maybe an afternoon run, or just a enjoy a frosty beverage at Deer Valley’s ski beach.

With the recent time change, sunset isn’t until nearly 8pm. There is time for a third activity for the day. Make it a Park City Trifecta; start the day on the slopes and add two more outdoor activities of your choice.

Park City Summer Music Scene

Summer seems to finally have established itself here in Park City and with it has come the various summer concert series'. These opportunities represent a great part of the Park City lifestyle and an added value to living in the area. Sounds of summer fill the air in Park City, Utah as free concerts can be heard most nights of the week. Sundays features music at the Park Silly Market from 10-5 on two stages. Also on Sundays are the Concerts at Quarry Village in Pinebrook starting at 5 pm. Tuesdays offer free concerts at the Lodge at Stillwater with their Patio Series offering great views of the Jordanelle Reservoir. Wednesdays features the Mountain Town Music Festival at Deer Valley's Snow Park Amphitheatre at 6pm. Thursdays have music offerings at the Newpark Town Center in the Kimball Junction area of Park City from 6-8pm. Also on Thursday evenings is the concerts in the park and farmers market in Heber City; market starts at 4:30, music begins at 6:30. Plaza Palooza is also a free outdoor concert at the base of the Silver Star Lift every Thursday from 6-9pm. Fridays and Saturdays: Canyons Resort summer concert series begins July 16 offering free concerts Saturdays at 6pm at the Resort Village. Park City offers many opportunities to enjoy music weekend nights, but not as many are free in nature. Other great live music opportunities in Park City can be found in the many local bars and restaurants. Events are constantly being added and with the vast number of listening opportunities it is impossible to catch them all, but nearly impossible to not find a good concert nearly any summer night of the week in Park City, Utah.

Halloween in Park City

Halloween in Park City seems to bring with it one of the first big snowstorms of the year. This year it appears that the snowstorm has hit a few days early. But while the snow is falling, the ski and snowboard season is still a month away. Luckily, there are some great fall events to take in here in Park City as we wait for the resorts to open for the season, and Halloween is one of them. Each year one of the great Halloween traditions here in Park City is a stroll through the Glenwood Cemetery. The cemetery is just north of the Park City Mountain Resort main base area next to the Snow Flower and Three Kings condominium communities. The Glenwood Cemetery is a beautiful spot at the base of the hill in an aspen grove.

Halloween at the Glenwood is put on by the Glenwood Cemetery Association in conjunction with the Park City Historical Society and Museum. Local actors in period costume stand next to the graves of former residents and tell stories of their lives. The tales are a record of just how precarious life in Park City was for those who made the area home during the mining boom. The scripts are given to the actors from the historical society and while the actors add a little dramatic flair, the stories are based on historical fact. The lives of the original Parkites and Summit County residents were a far cry from today's resort lifestyle. Currently the weather is calling for a mix of rain and snow for the weekend, but the weather wouldn't have slowed the residents of Glenwood Cemetery; get out and take in this event that happens just once a year. "Halloween at the Glenwood" runs from noon until 2pm on Sunday October 31^st. The event is free, but donations are appreciated.
